How to ship products to Amazon FBA
after purchased from China? For new sellers, there are many problems with shipping issues, such as how to ship from China to Amazon warehouse? What are the shipping methods from China to Amazon FBA? The cheapest way to ship? How do I clear customs and duties after the goods arrive ?
As a new Amazon seller, you are not a qualified Amazon seller if you don’t know the shipping costs, customs clearance and duties. If we need to do the preparation work ahead of time, then we can have the advantage of selling price. So we can make more profit.
This article mainly explains how to ship products from China to Amazon FBA warehouse. In order to solve the shipping problem of Amazon sellers, I will share the issues of Amazon shipping for everyone. I mainly share 4 major issues as below. There are four main ways to ship goods from China to Amazon FBA warehouse. these are:
The time of each way of transport and the cost of transportation are different. You can choose the method of transportation based on the weight of your product. If your time is urgent, you can choose international Express, such as DHL, UPS or FedEX, but the cost of transportation is very high. My suggestion is that if the weight of the goods is less than 21kg, you can choose international Express. If the weight of the goods is between 21kg and 100kg, choose to air transportation. If your products have 100kg + choose sea or train transportation will save a lot of shipping cost.
We describe each way of transportation in detail below so that you can make the right decision.
1.)Advantages and disadvantages of Express
Advantage: Usually takes only 2-4 business days. Fast, especially to the US and European countries. and it is possible to actually check the status of the goods.
Disadvantages: expensive and increase sales costs. The dimensional weight is calcuated by 5000 (if the dimension weight is large, it is charged by dimensional weight). There are also a lot of restrictions on goods,such as liquids, batteries and powder products…and more.
If the weight of your goods is less than 21kg, you can only choose express to Amazon FBA. Air, sea and train transportation require a minimum weight is 21kg or more.
2.) How to choose the right Express ?
You can choose from many Express companies to ship goods from China to Amazon FBA around the world. The issues we need to consider are customs clearance and tariff issues. For example, if ship it to the United States, the value of goods below $800 is not subject to customs duties and Customs clearance fees.
The EU imposes tariffs on products of very small value. For example, if ship it to UK, it will be taxed if the value exceeds 15 pounds. To the EU countries, the value of goods exceeds 20 euros, you must pay customs duties.
Let’s talk about these three international Express companies: FedEX, UPS and DHL. FedEX and UPS are American companies and DHL is a German company. If your product is shipped to the US, I recommend using FedEX and UPS because the two companies are more effective in customs clearance in the United States. If your product is shipped to Europe, I recommend using DHL because DHL is easier to clear in Europe. In the end, most of our customers will choose DHL to ship to the world, because the freight will be cheaper than FedEX and UPS.
We ship products to the US, and customs clearance & transportation time are very fast. DHL should be our best choice.
3.)How to calculate the weight ?
First let’s take a look at how to calculate the weight of the product. The Express companies have two methods of weighing.
- Actual weight
- Dimensional weight
Basically, when you ship your product by express, the express will charge you based on the dimensional weight or the actual weight of the product.
There are many special products, which are bulky, but the actual weight is very light, and the express company will charge a lot according to the dimensional weight.
This is the formula for calculating the dimensional weight:
Dimensional weight = Length (cm) * Width (cm) x Height(cm) /5000
Examples are as follows
Dimensional Weight: If your product box size is 50*50*50cm and the actual weight is 10kg. The express company will charge you 25kg weight (50*50*50cm) /5000=25kg) instead of the actual weight of 10 kg if you want to ship this box from China to Amazon FBA.
Actual Weight: Your product box size is 30*25*25cm and the actual weight is 18kg. If you want to ship this box from China to Amazon FBA, the express company will charge you 18 kilograms of actual weight instead of 3.75. Kilograms (20*25*15cm/5000=3.75kg).
4). Shipping fee from China to Amazon FBA by Express
The express shipping costs depend on many aspects, such as: weight, seasonality, whether the product has a battery. . . and many more.
Usually DHL is priced at $6 to $7 per kilogram and We can use this number to roughly calculate the express fees from China to Amazon fulfillment centers.
If your product weighs less than 21 kilograms, the express company will calculate the shipping cost per 0.5 kilogram, the cost will be relatively high. If your product weights more than 21 kg, the express will calculate the shipping cost per 1 kilogram. So I recommend to buy products that reaches 21 kg.
Example:
1.) <21kg:
The shipping cost: First 0.5kg is $15 ,Next 0.5kg is $6.
If your weight is 5kg. So the total amount is $69USD($15USD + ($12*4.5kg)).
2.)>=21kg:
The shipping cost: Each kg is $6.
If your weight is 28kg. So the total amount is $168 ($6*28kg=168USD).

Here are some tips to save money:
Tip 1: The shipping cost is much cheaper than your own express account if you are using a China shipping agent or your supplier in China.
The best way is to let your Chinese supplier help you ship the goods to Amazon warehouse, or find a shipping agent to help you with your transportation.
Tip 2: If your product is shipped to the United States, there are no customs duty and customs clearance fee for any goods below $800.
We recommend that you communicate with your supplier in advance and declare your value below $800 before shipping if you buy a large quantity of goods ($1,500 or more). First,you can ask your supplier to divide the goods into two shipments and then declare the value of each shipment to be less than $800. Take this way we can save on customs duties and customs clearance fees.
5.) Express delivery time from China to the US and Europe
Express is our best choice if your Amazon FBA inventory is urgently replenished. Because the transportation time is the fastest to reach Amazon warehouse.
DHL delivery time: It usually takes 2-4 business days to Amazon FBA in the US and Europe.
UPS delivery time: It only takes 2-3 business days to the US. It takes 3-4 business days to Europe.
FedEX delivery time: It only takes 2-3 business days to the United States. It takes about 4 working days to Europe.
The above delivery times are not much different. So most of our customers will choose DHL Express to ship their products.
Sea transportation is one of the most important modes of transportation to Amazon FBA warehouse.
Advantages: The freight is cheap and the loading is very large.
Disadvantages: Long time, high risk of navigation, inaccurate sailing date and susceptible to weather.
Sea transportation is your best choice if you buy a lot of products from China and ship them to Amazon FBA warehouse and mainly to help you reduce costs. You must know your Amazon product inventory before choosing sea transportation, because the shipping time basically takes about 35 days.
1.) Sea transportation operation process
First,we need to understand the Sea transportation operations. The following are two common sea shipping to Amazon FBA.
- From your supplier or shipping agent to an Amazon fulfillment centers.
- From your supplier or shipping agent to personal address.
You can choose to ship directly from your supplier or shipping Agent to amazon fulfillment centers or your own warehouse. Because many of our customers choose to do Amazon’s preparation for their product, such as product inspection, labeling and packaging.
The Sea transportation process is operated by two freight forwarders, one in China and the other in the US or Europe. China’s freight forwarding mainly deals with domestic transportation (from suppliers to seaport), export declarations, and shipping to destination. The destination freight forwarder is mainly responsible for handling import customs clearance, customs duties and transportation from the port to amazon fulfillment centers. After the customs clearance is completed, the freight forwarder will usually arrange DHL, UPS or FedEX from the sea port to amazon FBA.
How to find your own shipping agent ?
Solution 1: Find your own Amazon freight forwarder.
As an Amazon seller, you must find a good FBA shipping agent to work with. Because the shipping agent can always provide you with a shipping quote for any Amazon warehouse address. So you can calculate the cost of your product in a very short time and it is very necessary.
If you are buying products from China, I suggest you find a China shipping agent to cooperate, which will be faster ,save time, and the shipping price will be cheaper than your country’s shipping agent. The cost of the middleman can be saved.
In this case, you need to tell the delivery conditions of the product to the China shipping agent: FOB price or EX-Works. If your product delivery condition in China is Ex-Works, you also need to provide the address of the supplier, so The shipping agent can calculate the domestic shipping fee ,Or you can directly pay the domestic shipping fee to the supplier from your supplier to the shipping agent’s warehouse in China. So the shipping agent can provide you with accurate shipping costs from china to amazon FBA.
Solution 2: Let your supplier help you transport to Amazon FBA.
You need to confirm it if your supplier has experience shipping to Amazon warehouse when purchasing. If your supplier does not have any experience, you must consider looking for a China Shipping Agent to help you to amazon fba. If your supplier has experience shipping to Amazon FBA, you need to identify a few very important issues with your supplier, such as whether the shipping includes customs clearance, customs duties, and whether the customs clearance is completed to Amazon warehouse address…. etc.
Tips: So the ability to clear customs is very important. Once there is a problem with customs clearance, Your goods may be detained by customs.
That’s why we must emphasize the importance of having an excellent shipping agent in China.
2.) Shipping time from China to Amazon Fulfillment Centers.
Shipping time from China to Amazon FBA is about 25-35 days or longer. The most important shipping factor has many factors that affect transportation time, such as weather, customs inspection and force majeure.
United States: It takes about 25 days from China to Amazon warehouse in the western United States. It takes about 30 days to reach Amazon warehouse in the central United States. It takes about 35 days to reach Amazon warehouse in the eastern United States.
Canada: It takes about 25 days from China to Amazon warehouse in Canada.
Europe: It takes about 30-35 days from China to Europe (UK, Germany, France, Czech Republic, Italy, Poland, Spain).
Tip: There are many products are now sent to Amazon warehouses, so Customs staff may spend more time checking your products and it is normal to delay for 2 weeks. Especially on Black Friday, you have to ship your products from China to Amazon warehouse at least 2 months in advance.
I suggest that we need to ship the product to Amazon warehouse in advance so that we can get more sales opportunities and profits.
3.) Calculate the weight and size of sea transportation
There are two methods for calculating the weight. One is calculated on a cubic basis, and other is on kilogram.
Volum: Sea Shipping to Amazon FBA requires a minimum of 2 cubic meters, but the point is that it does not include customs clearance and customs duties, and can only be transported to the destination port. I don’t recommend this method because many sellers are not able to clear customs, and many sellers are not living in the US or Europe.
Weight: The US requirements for sea shipping are at least 100kg+. Canada’s sea shipping requirements are 21kg+. Europe’s sea shipping requirements are 100kg+. If the dimensional weight is bigger than the actual weight, it is charged by the dimensional weight.
The formula for calculating the dimensional weight is as follows:
Dimensional weight = Length (cm) * Width (cm) * Height (cm) / 6000;
For example: If you have 10 master boxes, the size of each box is 50*60*50cm and the actual weight per box is only 10kg. you will be charged at 25kg per carton and A total of 250kg is charged instead of 100kg.
4.) About shipping to the United States
The calculation of sea freight is more complicated, but the shipping cost is composed of basic freight and surcharges, as well as customs clearance and customs duties. Surcharges mainly include: LCL, documentation, AMS, customs, insurance, warehousing and trailer fees.
Therefore, in order to save these complicated calculations, we recommend finding a professional FBA shipping agent in China who will help you with all transportation and customs clearance.
The price of sea shipping is more stable within one year after compared with air transport, The sea shipping price in the peak season may be a little higher than the off-season.

Tips:
1.)The Sea freight in the eastern United States is the highest (Zip code: beginning with zip code 0, 1, 2, 3).
2.)Central America is cheaper than the eastern (Zip code: beginning with zip code 4, 5, 6).
3.)The cheapest shipping is in the US (Zip code: beginning with zip code 7,8,9).
When you create Amazon Shipping Label, Amazon will automatically assign your product to a different warehouse address, so we can’t Selected.
Finally, I wish you good luck and can be assigned to the warehouse address in the western United States.
If your product weight is more than 21 kilograms, you can choose to ship by air. Air transport is not as convenient as express delivery, because the goods must pass Customs.
The basics of air transportation from China to Amazon FBA now include customs clearance and customs duties. I suggest that you find a Chinese FBA freight forwarder to handle your products, and the shipping cost includes customs clearance and customs duties. So we can save a lot of trouble.
1.)Weight calculation
There are two methods for calculating the weight of air transport, one is to charge according to the actual weight, and other is to the dimensional weight. If the dimensional weight is greater than the actual weight, it is charged by the dimensional weight. This method of calculating shipping costs is similar to Express. The difference is that the Express is the volume divided by 5000, but the air transport is the volume divided by 6000.
Air transport dimensional weight calculation method:
Dimensional weight = length (cm) * width (cm) * height (cm) / 6000.
The price of air transportation will be much cheaper after comapred with Express. Also the calculation of the size and weight that is better than the express. For example, the same size: 50x50x60cm, Expressis charged at 30kg, and air transportation is only charged at 25kg. Air transport is a good choice.
2.) Transportation time from China to Amazon by Air
Air transport time will be about 10 days slower than Express, but it all depends on the flight chosen by your freight forwarder.
- From China to Amazon warehouse in the US: Usually takes 10-12 working days (including customs clearance)
- From China to Amazon warehouse in Canada: Usually takes 12 working days (including customs clearance)
- From China to Europe (UK, Germany, France, Czech Republic, Italy, Poland, Spain) Amazon warehouse:Usually takes 13 working days (including customs clearance)
Tip:
Tip: You can decide whether to choose air transport based on your sales on Amazon. The shipping costs generally include customs clearance and customs duties if you use a shipping agent or your supplier, but you must confirm with your supplier or shipping agent in advance. After the customs clearance is completed, the shipping agent will usually arrange DHL, UPS or FedEX from the airport to Amazon FBA.
Train services are only available when shipping to Europe from China. Time and price are almost the same as train and ocean shipped to Amazon warehouse. It takes about 30 days from China to reach all Amazon Fulfillment Centers in Europe. Train is safer than sea shipping. Most of our customers choose train transport if the product is shipped to Europe.
1.)Dimensional weight of train transportation
The dimensional weight calculation of train is the same as air transportation, and the volume is divided by 6000. If the actual weight is bigger than the dimensional weight, it will be charged according to the actual weight. If the weight is less than 1 kg, it is calculated as 1 kg. For example, the weight of the goods is 205.8 kg, and the shipping agent charges 206 kg. If the size is not 1 cm, it is calculated by 1 cm, for example, the size of the box is 48.5 cm * 51.4 cm * 51.1 cm, and the shipping agent calculates the dimensional weight by 49 cm * 52 cm * 52 cm.
Train dimensional weight calculation method:
Dimensional weight = length (cm) * width (cm) * height (cm) / 6000.
2.) Transportation time from China to Amazon via train

Usually, transportation products from China to Amazon require two certifications. One is product certification for customs and the other for Amazon. When purchasing products from China, it is better to confirm what certifications the suppliers have.You must consider replacing another supplier if the product does not have any certification. If the supplier’s product does not have any certification, it means that his product is unqualified. 1.)Certification required by customs
When the goods are cleared, Customs has the right to require your products to provide relevant product certification. If you are unable to provide it, Customs may fine, detain or destroy your product. 2.) Amazon required certification
When selling products on Amazon, we must know if we need product certifications to sell on Amazon. We must comply with Amazon’s product regulations which would otherwise cause the listing to be closed.
Last year, the fidget spinners sold very crazy on Amazon (hot selling). Many sellers have purchased a large number of fidget spinners products from China and ship them to Amazon FBA. But many sellers did not consult Amazon when they purchased the product. When the product is shipped to Amazon FBA, Amazon requires sellers to provide certification, ASTM F963-16 certification in the United States, and SOR/2011-17 in Canada. Before shipping products to Amazon FBA, we must understand Amazon’s requirements for products and boxes. All product packaging, boxes must comply with Amazon warehouse regulations. If we do not comply with Amazon’s requirements, your product will be rejected by Amazon warehouse. If your product packaging does not have the correct FBA label, Amazon does not know that your product belongs to that seller.
Amazon has different packaging requirements, and the requirements are different. For example, if your product packaging is an OPP bag with an opening size larger than 5 inches, Amazon must ask you to put a “suffocation” warning label on the packaging.
If the FBA label is not placed, your item will also be rejected. when your goods arrive at the FBA,they need to scan the barcode to identify them and place the goods in the correct position. So you can see that labels are very important process in FBA.

Below I share some Amazon warehouse requirements for products, weights and boxes:
1.)Product label
Amazon’s labeling of products is required. Amazon warehouse will scan your FNSKU label when your products are delivered , so Amazon will place your products in the correct warehouse location.
FNSKU label:
Amazon requires an FNSKU label on each product package. If we don’t attach the FNSKU label, so Amazon can’t identify your product and you can’t sell it on Amazon.
Once you’ve created a product on Amazon backend, you can download the FNSKU label directly.

- 21-up labels 63.5 mm x 38.1 mm on A4
- 24-up labels 63.5 mm x 33.9 mm on A4
- 24-up labels 64.6 mm x 33.8 mm on A4

Suffocation Label:
If your product package is an OPP bag, you must pay attention to whether the size is bigger than 5 inches. If the OPP bag is larger than 5 inches, Amazon must require a “suffocation” label. Amazon will not allow you to sell if find that your product is OPP bag packaging and there is no “suffocation” label.
2.) Shipping label
If you want to ship to Amazon warehouse, we must create a “Shipping Plan” on Amazon background. You can download the master box label. After downloading the box label, you can print it out and then attach the label to your box. If the box doesn’t have this label attached, Amazon will also reject you. Amazon requires that each box must have 2 shipping labels at least.
3.) Amazon Requirements: Box Size and Weight
Amazon warehouse also has requirements for the size and weight of the box. If you do not follow Amazon’s request, Amazon may fine, reject or warning to you .
- The size of the master box cannot exceed 25 inches on either side.
- The weight of a single box cannot exceed 50 lb. If the weight of a single box exceeds 50 lb, Need a “Team Lift” label must be attached to the top of the box.If the weight of a single box exceeds 100 lb, need a “Mech Lift” label must be attached to the box.
Tip: Normally, if you are the first time, Amazon may warn you. If it is the second time, Amazon warehouse may reject your product. If your product size or weight exceeds the above requirements, please consult Amazon in advance.

Hi! I am a new seller (FBA) and I had placed my first order from alibaba last February. I have also paid and hired an inspection company inside alibaba trade asurance. (it is in the contract) Tommorow is the day of the inspection. I have paid also 30% deposit for my products and I suppose to pay the remain 70% after the inspection check and informs me that everything is ok. But, as you can imagine my product is in the restrictions of amazon (temporary prioritizing) so I can’ t even create the shipping plan in my listing. My supplier from China told me that now there is no air DDP shipping because of the virus situation and they can only send my products with sea shipping. And they will refund me the difference. (because air is more expensive than sea shipping of course) Also they told me that the air shipping price has increased the last month because of the situation anyway and they asked me to pay more than we agreed the first time. Or second option to use the sea shipping as I said before. Because I am not sure about what to do now and if all this is truth or not, please advice me so I will do the best possible. Thank you in advance!
Do we need to add “Made in China’ or mark the boxes in anyway apart from the shipping label?
